We are taught that language is important. But why it’s important is something we rarely think about on a daily basis. We don’t often stop or dwell on the language we use or realise that the words we choose can have the power to influence the lives of others by changing minds, shaping thoughts, and making worlds of difference merely by what is said or not said.
The beauty of language is that it becomes more powerful when understood by a wider community.
Its power will grow when language is shared. Sharing, reshaping and challenging poor language is something we hope will make positive changes.

Our Reshaping Conversations film uses real experiences to get people thinking differently and our booklet identifies helpful ways to help people feel more comfortable talking about SEND.
Reshaping Conversations
Reshaping conversations is aimed at helping professionals feel more comfortable talking about disability with SEND families. By highlighting the importance of using positive language we hope to bridge the gaps between the vital role professionals play in the care of our SEND children and foster better working relationships.
Over 200 parents and carers shared their experiences of conversations that they felt were unhelpful. Many of which contained outdated and poor language choices. Many of these statements have simply come from a lack of understanding or awareness of children with SEND and their additional needs. Many conversations no doubt come from a well-meaning place and are rarely said to cause upset or offence.

As part of the Reshaping Conversations project Swindon SEND Families Voice has produced a training module that will be shared across Swindon Borough Council and the BSW Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS in hopes that it will help professionals explore the use of positive language when working with SEND families.
Without the involvement of our incredible SEND parents and carers, partnerships with local SEND groups and support from fantastic creative Swindon based businesses we wouldn’t have been able to make this project a reality. So a big heartfelt thank you to everyone who’s been involved.
